These brightly colored toy wooden birds are from Varanasi. Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, was once one of the largest toy-producing centers in India. The birds are carved out of wood and then hand-painted. This ancient folk craft with its very distinct regional character is dying out like some of the birds themselves.
